Why Use Natural Toothpaste?

Why use natural toothpaste and why spend the time making your own at home? Most store bought brands and brand names have additives and chemicals that can harm your mouth and your entire body. Here are some of the additives we have found in toothpaste that we view as a red flag and to avoid at all costs!

  • Fluoride: We recommend avoiding fluoride at all costs! We don't want to get into all the health reasons why, but basically fluoride is a poison and toxin that has a lot of harmful effects on thyroid, immune system, and metabolism. If you're really want to dive into why fluoride is bad for you, please can read Mark Sisson’s breakdown and Dr. Mercola’s opinon here.
  • Surfactants: Surfactants give toothpaste the foam and lather we all love. Sodium lauryl sulfate is most widely used in toothpaste and has been shown to cause ulcers in the mouth and canker soars.
  • Sweeteners: Sorbitol, sodium saccharin and other artificial sweeteners are often used in toothpaste to improve taste, even though there is no evidence that these sweeteners are beneficial (or even safe) for use in the mouth. Xylitol has shown some positive benefits for oral health in some studies, but it remains a controversial ingredient in toothpaste.
  • Triclosan: A chemical used in antibacterial soaps and products. The FDA is currently re-evaluating it for safety in human use.
  • Glycerin: Glycerin is found in many toothpastes, especially natural toothpastes. Glycerin is a sweet, colorless liquid and some research says it can coat teeth and prevent them from benefitting from the minerals in saliva. It does more bad than good.

So now what, how do I keep my mouth healthy, teeth clean and pearly white without these toxic ingredients? Our toothpaste recipe is easy and really works. I have been using our DIY toothpaste for a couple years now and paired with oil pulling every morning, my teeth are white and cavity-free, which is saying a lot since I am quite the coffee drinker. Try it for yourselves and let us know what you think?
